چکیده

In this work we define a rational extension SROEL(⊓,×) T of the low complexity description logic SROEL(⊓,×), which underlies the OWL EL ontology language. The logic is extended with a typicality operator T, whose semantics is based on Lehmann and Magidor’s ranked models and allows for the definition of defeasible inclusions. We consider both rational entailment and minimal entailment. We show that deciding instance checking under minimal entailment is a CONP-hard problem while, under rational entailment, instance checking can be computed in polynomial time. In particular, we develop a Datalog materialization calculus for instance checking under rational entailment.

Defeasible Reasoning in SROEL: from Rational Entailment to Rational Closure

In this work we study a rational extension SROEL(⊓,×) T of the low complexity description logic SROEL(⊓,×), which underlies the OWL EL ontology language. The extension involves a typicality operator T, whose semantics is based on Lehmann and Magidor’s ranked models and allows for the definition of defeasible inclusions. We consider both rational entailment and minimal entailment. We show that d...

ASP for Minimal Entailment in a Rational Extension

This work exploits Answer Set Programming (ASP) for reasoning in a rational extension of SROEL(⊓,×) [5], the low complexity description logic which underlies the OWL EL ontology language. It is based on a preferential approach to defeasible reasoning in description logics (DLs) [2, 3], which has been developed along the lines of the preferential semantics introduced by Kraus, Lehmann and Magido...

ASP for minimal entailment in a rational extension of SROEL

In this paper we exploit Answer Set Programming (ASP) for reasoning in a rational extension SROEL(⊓, ×)R T of the low complexity description logic SROEL(⊓,×), which underlies the OWL EL ontology language. In the extended language, a typicality operator T is allowed to define concepts T(C) (typical C’s) under a rational semantics. It has been proven that instance checking under rational entailme...

Efficient Inferencing for the Description Logic Underlying OWL EL

The recent OWL 2 W3C recommendation includes the lightweight ontology language OWL EL which is semantically based on an extension of the EL description logic (DL). It is widely assumed that inferencing in OWL EL is possible in polynomial time, but it is not obvious how to extend existing reasoning procedures for EL accordingly. We set out to close this gap by developing inferencing methods for ...

Kant’s Philosophy of Religion and the Challenges of Moral Commitment

Kant believes that the concepts of a just and compassionate God and the life beyond death spring from our rational need to unite happiness with virtue. But since Kant had banished happiness from any place in moral reasoning, his philosophy of religion have been deemed as not merely discontinuous with his ethics but radically opposed to it. This article tries to argue against this apparent incon...
